To make a Steel Pan, you will need a steel barrel, several hammers, nail punch, pencil & ruler, wood to burn.
- The first process is called sinking. You carefully hammer the face of the drum with your heavy hammer, making sure you do not split the drum. Depending on what instrument you are making you take your drum to different depth.
- Make a bun fire in a safe place, and burn the drum for about 30 minutes. This is to soften the steel and get rid of the old paint.
- Mark out your pattern (layout of notes) onto the drum in pencil.
- Shape your notes using hammers. And then groove around them using your nail punch and hammer.
- Cut the drum around the side; put some holes in the top rim to hang the pan up. It's now ready to tune.
- You tune the pan by raising the notes from underneath, then hammering them gently from above, listening until you reach the required notes. This is done for all the notes. The pan is left for a few days and then the tuning process is repeated.
- Finally the pan is now ready to be painted or chrome plated.
